The Division of Administration and Finance is committed to providing quality campus services to faculty, staff, students and external constituencies in support of the university’s mission of teaching, research, and public service. The division includes Facilities Planning & Management, Business Services, Budget, Human Resources, Information Technology Services and Police & Parking Services.

Position Summary

Security, administration, deployment, management and ongoing support of enterprise computing systems are the primary responsibilities of this position. This includes providing security and support for e-mail, directory services, virtualization, and other 3rd-party applications used across the enterprise. The position is also responsible for securing, maintaining and supporting externally hosted solutions. This position reports to the Assistant Director of Network Services performing within the established goals and priorities that are consistent with the Information Technology Services Department goals.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a technology-related field from an accredited 4 year college or university OR equivalent field related experienced.

  • At least 5 years of experience in servers and systems support. 

  • Working knowledge of Windows server and Linux operating systems 

  • Working knowledge of system design, support, and deployment.

  • Working knowledge of architecture and operation of a large-scale enterprise services.

  • Extensive knowledge and experience of system security, including the design, configuration, and tuning of security appliances.

  • Working knowledge of systems tuning to achieve high performance.

  • Excellent communication, customer service, and/or interpersonal skills– both orally and in writing.

  • Interpersonal relationship management and dealing with conflicting needs and demands for services.

  • Experience with anti-virus software, intrusion detection, firewalls and content filtering.

  • Knowledge of risk assessment tools, technologies and methods.

  • Knowledge of disaster recovery, computer forensic tools, technologies and methods.

  • Experience planning, researching and developing security policies, standards and procedures.

  • Ability to communicate network security issues to peers and management.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a technology related field from an accredited 4 year college or university.

  • 7 years’ experience on leading large-scale enterprise services.

  • Knowledge of project management.

  • Working knowledge of server virtualization software, such as VMware.

  • This position will work in a dynamic environment with a diverse group of people. Work with many different types of server technologies and applications. Work closely with different departments within ITS as well as faculty, support staff and students.
Duties/Responsibilities

Responsibility Statement Deployment, administration, management, and support of the UWL Network Enterprise system
Duties to Support Responsibility
  • Install/upgrade, configure, secure, and patch server operating system and enterprise applications in a virtual environment and on physical hardware

  • Protect system by defining access privileges, control structures, and resources.

  • Recognize problems by identifying abnormalities; reporting violations.

  • Monitor computer logs and report on any anomalies.

  • Install security measures to protect systems and information infrastructure, including firewalls and data encryption programs.

  • Work with security team to perform tests and uncover security vulnerabilities.

  • Fix detected vulnerabilities to maintain a high-security standard.

  • Perform system and infrastructure hardening.

  • Implements security improvements by assessing current situation; evaluating trends; anticipating requirements.

  • Determine security violations and inefficiencies by conducting periodic assessments.

  • Upgrade system by implementing and maintaining security controls.

  • Monitor, modify tune, troubleshoot, and report all aspects of systems, for hardware and software support including resource statistics and system security 

  • Manage enterprise infrastructure to assure maximum availability with minimal outages. 

  • Serve as a campus resource by performing needs assessments and requirements gathering to assess server needs for campus computing and software implementation projects.

  • Prepare installation, diagnostic procedures, and participate in training other ITSstaff and other related staff.  

  • Administrate and setup applications and maintain environments for the testing of various solutions. Analyze production implementation, identify and resolve errors, ensure ongoing stability of the environment

  • Provide operating systems administration and support for database servers, including Microsoft SQL Server and ORACLE servers.

  • Manage the campus server technologies to include network, backup, virtual, and storage systems. 

  • Evaluate hardware and software products for contractual obligations and compatibility

  • Monitor, support and coordinate system development/changes from the perspective of general systems architecture and integration with the systems across the university and the University of Wisconsin System.

  • Assist in the development of guidelines, procedures and standards within the department 

  • Prepare project plans and schedules for network systems development, deployment, enhancement, and maintenance efforts 

  • Create and maintain batch processes in MS Powershell and MS DOS to update and maintain systems.

  • Make recommendations and implement changes based on industry recognized best practices.

  • The field of Information Technology is in a state of constant change. This creates problems between versions of operating systems, computer languages and even hardware that require extensive investigation and research. This involves use of the Internet, printed references and communication with other ITS staff members and vendor help desks about solutions for existing system problems and evaluation of potential future development environments.

  • Stay abreast of current security enhancements and make recommendations to management.

  • Communicate research and system development information to other members of ITS and other University departments through demonstrations, presentations, and prototypes.
