Queen Margaret's School is seeking a Design & Technology teacher beginning August 26, 2019. This is anticipated to be a 1.0 FTE position; however, the School reserves the right to confirm FTE allocation after class sizes have been finalized.

The successful candidate will have significant experience using technologies to transform student learning. With a comprehensive understanding of both computer science and programming, the Design & Technology Teacher will also know how to teach students to leverage technologies in pursuit of their design and entrepreneurship goals. This teacher will also be able to inspire students and colleagues by integrating technologies across subject areas. 

The candidate must possess or be eligible for Teacher Certification through the BC Ministry of Education Teacher Regulation Branch.

Dedicated time for collaborating with a team to design and implement cross-curricular units of study throughout the year is provided.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and teach engaging computer science classes, adhering to the redesigned BC Ministry of Education curriculum and the QMS mission, vision and values

  • Empower students to be critical thinkers, skillful researchers, and discerning, technologically literate, ethical users of information

  • Work collaboratively with colleagues to incorporate best practices in the use of information resources, multimedia technology applications, and online learning

  • Differentiate to accommodate diverse student learning and language needs

  • Use technology effectively to support student learning

  • Provide ongoing formative and summative assessments within each unit of study

  • Report on progress formally using MyED BC and informally with families on a regular basis

  • Develop cross-curricular links through regular collaborative planning meetings

  • Create a safe and nurturing classroom environment in which all students feel valued and respected

  • Bring energy, enthusiasm and a love for learning to the classroom

  • Contribute to planning and delivery of special events

  • Take and active part in all professional development activities, including staff meetings

  • Lead co-curricular assignments with enthusiasm

  • Be a role model for students at all times in terms of personal actions

  • Champion the program through participation in parent evenings and workshops as requested

  • Collaborate with peers to support a student-centered learning environment

Qualifications

The following are requirements for this position:

  • Graduate of a recognized B.Ed. program

  • Proof of BC Ministry of Education Teacher Certification

  • Experience teaching computer science or programming  to Grades 8-12

  • Demonstrated experience with innovative practices, including the integration of educational technology tools in daily practice

  • A passionate interest in developing the capacities of students to apply technologies to transform their learning

  • Strong organizational and communication skills with a proven ability to communicate and develop relationships with a wide array of stakeholders (students, parents, teacher colleagues, community members, etc.

  • Commitment to continuous professional growth and professional learning

  • Proven ability to motivate students through meaningful curriculum and inquiry-driven learning

  • Demonstrated ability to develop strong learning relationships through the provision of a safe and trusting learning environment

  • Experience using project-based learning approaches and commitment to regularly engage in experiential learning opportunities with students

  • Familiarity with relevant assessment strategies to provide continual feedback

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively differentiate and be responsive to student needs

  • Experience, sensitivity and awareness of working within a multicultural environment

  • Willingness to embrace the ethos of an independent school and make a commitment to the extensive co-curricular life of an independent school

Preference will be given to candidates who also have the following skills and qualifications:

  • Standard First Aid Certification or above

  • Valid driver's license and clean driver abstract
