The Wheeler School, a co-ed. N-12 independent day school of approximately 800 students in the College Hill neighborhood of Providence, RI, is seeking a full-time Lower School Technology Facilitator. Founded by visionary educator and artist Mary C. Wheeler in 1889, Wheeler is a school committed to challenging academics, a rich performing and visual arts curriculum, and innovation. Our urban campus is supplemented by a 120-acre farm campus, which is the site of seven fields, tennis courts, a field house, and provides many experiential learning opportunities for students of all ages.

The Lower School Technology Facilitator has three crucial and evolving components, in addition to other responsibilities, in the Wheeler and Hamilton Lower Schools:

  1. Being a leader in and promoter of academic technology integration, especially helping the division heads clarify the role of technology integration in the Lower School and the skills and abilities every fifth grader should possess when graduating.

  2. Serving as a reliable collaborator with faculty on technology integration helping them to become independent and confident users of technology in the classroom.

  3. Searching for and/or creating engaging and timely teacher training and professional development, while working with the Lower School administration to develop a technology learning culture in the Wheeler and Hamilton divisions.

As a leader/promoter of academic technology integration, this person will:

  • Keep current on developments and trends in educational technology.

  • Model use of educational technology for faculty.

  • Present regularly at team, division, and at times all-school meetings.

  • Collaborate with the library department and its use of education technology.

  • Above all, collaborate with the division head to have education technology goals for the division that are consistent with the Strategic Design.

As a partner with faculty in technology integration, this person will:

  • Collaborate with faculty in creating learning experiences that integrate technology including assisting, problem-solving, and assessing these experiences.

  • Work with the technology and library departments and programs like the DIB Lab to promote Lower School education integration and to help to assure the interests of the Lower School are considered.

As a collaborator with Lower School Administrators in creating a culture of professional learning around educational technology to foster enthusiasm for, curiosity in and independence with educational technology, this person will:

  • Work with Lower School administrators to establish technology competencies for all faculty and staff.

  • Communicate to both divisional faculties the importance of these competencies.

  • Assist faculty and staff to develop and surpass these basic competencies levels.

  • Bachelor’s degree is required

  • Demonstrated track record being a highly competent teacher

  • Strong communication skills

  • Strong interpersonal skills

  • Professional courage, curiosity, passion, and energy

  • Demonstrated track record of innovation

  • Knowledge of design teaching and learning principles

  • Patience, flexibility, and a sense of humor

  • Strong organizational and time management skills

  • Willingness to jump in and help department members, faculty, and staff

Other duties and responsibilities:

  • Assist technology department with technology issues especially those pertaining to monitoring ticketing system, and configuring/maintaining student 1:1 Chromebooks.

  • Meet with teachers, including Specials instructors, to help them plan technology activities related to curricular themes,

  • General duties expected of all Lower School faculty and staff

  • Attend department, division, and all-school meetings

Teaching duties

  • To be negotiated with the Division Heads

Candidates should have familiarity with: 

  • Google Workspace

This is a 12-month position with specific summer responsibilities spelled out by the technology department and division heads.

Reports to: Lower School division head, Hamilton Lower School division head.
