Position Primary Purpose and General Responsibilities

The School of Business is looking to hire a Technology Operations Specialist who will be responsible for assisting end-users, installing software, troubleshooting, and mitigating technology problems in both classrooms and offices. This position will assist in school technology projects – including but not limited to asset management, semester surplus, and office & classroom technology upgrades. It will be responsible for monitoring technology equipment within the School of Business and proactively perform periodic preventive maintenance. The position will be counted on for being a liaison on University Committees to enhance and promote the use of various technologies and will work closely with the Help Desk Manager and Educational Technology Specialist.

Minimum Hiring Standards

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related discipline or equivalent work experience.

  • Proficient in troubleshooting, maintaining, upgrading and repairing hardware/software

  • Advanced knowledge of various platforms and software iOS, macOS, Microsoft suite of products (Windows, Office, etc), Android, Linux

  • Diverse understanding of both PCs and Apple devices

  • Keen understanding of enterprise PC and Mac desktop standards, security and administration

  • Exemplary customer service skills to provide faculty, staff, and students with friendly, prompt assistance

  • Demonstrated ability to translate complex information in a professional manner so that it is understandable to computer users at all levels

  • Desire to work as a part of a close-knit team

  • Remain flexible in a busy, diverse and sometimes fast-paced environment

  • Experience with KACE Systems Management Appliance

  • Familiarity with Active Directory

  • Experience completing most work with limited supervision, appropriately judging when to seek assistance or guidance from subject experts or management

  • Must be able to provide excellent written and verbal communication skills in a clear, concise, and organized manner to a variety of audiences (management, peers, and users) as well as the ability to write documentation

  • Able to work in a high stress, fast-paced situations, and multi-task on occasion

  • Able to lift and carry 50 pounds without assistance

  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.

Preferred Hiring Standards

  • Experience working in a higher education environment

  • CompTIA A+ certification

  • Advanced degree in information systems or a related discipline and 3 years of professional experience
