NBME®

Vice President, Business Development

The Search

National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) seeks a creative and entrepreneurial leader to serve as its first Vice President for Business Development (VPBD). The VPBD will play a critical role in advancing NBME’s short-and long-term strategic growth initiatives by leading business development projects and identifying, assessing, and coordinating collaborations with other organizations to meet the evolving needs of health care professionals.

Founded in 1915, NBME is an independent, not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to its mission to protect the health of the public through state-of-the-art assessment of health professionals along the continuum of education, training, and practice. NBME’s vision is to improve healthcare for patients by providing a range of tools to support the comprehensive growth and development of healthcare professionals around the world. NBME is a well-recognized and trusted brand that currently supports educators and regulators with a wide array of assessment products and services, including the USMLE, the universal, high-stakes foundational examination in medical education to determine eligibility to practice. Building from this base, NBME is engaged in an organization-wide effort to expand its leadership in assessment science through a portfolio of new products and services that meet the modern needs of educational institutions, health systems, and professionals in practice.

The VPBD will support the growth of NBME’s product offerings in the rapidly developing areas of competency-based and longitudinal assessments. The VPBD will partner with NBME leadership to develop and scope expansion strategies in current and growth markets, keeping a strong pulse on industry trends and continually scouting and updating a comprehensive landscape survey of business development opportunities. The VPBD will lead cross-functional due diligence teams to assess new opportunities, many of which will involve creating strategic partnerships with outside companies or organizations that complement NBME’s expertise and capabilities. The VPBD will lead efforts to identify the most promising partnership opportunities and move them to fruition, maintaining strong working relationships with potential partners. Over time, the VPBD will work with NBME leadership to create enduring business relationships that meet the strategic, commercial, and growth agenda of the organization. The VPBD will work to negotiate and execute deals of all types, including co-development, licensing and acquisitions.

NBME is internationally regarded for its leadership in health care assessment and the rigor of its programs. The VPBD will have a unique opportunity to collaborate with subject matter experts to identify emerging needs in assessment and to transform them into commercial product offerings that fundamentally improve the quality of health care delivery in the U.S. and around the world. In this function that bridges assessment science and product development, the VPBD will be a catalyst for growth within the NBME, entrepreneurial in establishing external relationships, and creative in building agile processes for partnership expansion.

NBME seeks a creative, energetic, and knowledgeable leader to elevate an already outstanding organization. Candidates will demonstrate a track record of leading an organization or unit through the process of securing partnerships and acquisitions in service to organizational goals; experience planning strategic expansion and leading growth efforts; proficiency in translating strategic business objectives into actionable business and operational plans; and skill in leading cross-functional teams through the execution of strategic goals and projects. Ten or more years of progressive and directly applicable experience is desired, with in-depth related industry experience in digital education, education technology, assessment, or medical education highly preferred.
