Web Content Manager

Overview: This position calls for a proactive, seasoned interactive web content developer who possesses a high degree of understanding of web design, database systems, information architecture best practices, and search engine optimization. The ideal candidate will bring web analytics and development experience, as well as high energy and a passion for collaboration with various constituents, both internal and external. The Web Content Manager will work in the Blackbaud/WhippleHill CMS environment. The Web Content Manager will be expected to consult on strategic decisions related to current and future web technologies and to continually improve the quality of the school’s online presence. It is critical that this person be a strong writer and possess exceptional organizational, analytical and interpersonal skills. The Web Content Manager will be part of the IT team and is expected to participate in and support all departmental efforts with special emphasis on collaborative work with the Director of Communications and the Office of Admission. This person will plan, schedule and conduct all web trainings for constituents, both internal and external. The person who holds this position also will guide a web design club for students and may teach a half-credit class to students in website design (3x per 7-day rotation). This person must be able to work successfully in an independent manner in a deadline-oriented environment.
 
Responsibilities:
  • Report to the Director of Technology for day-to-day responsibilities, planning and performance metrics.
  • Ensure the website reflects the school’s mission, vision and core values, unique culture and daily activities at all times, creating and maintaining compelling web pages that adhere to/uphold St. Stephen’s brand identity standards.
  • Work closely with departments, faculty, staff and parent volunteers (both internal and external) to understand, evaluate and monitor website objectives and provide timely solutions to constituent needs. In coordination with the Office of Admission, develop web marketing for International Office, Tennis Academy, Soccer Academy and Theatre Focus programs.
  • Take proactive steps to recommend updates and correct aspects of the site content, design and functionality to improve overall performance and user experience.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Communications and the Office of Admission to maintain timely and appropriate messaging on the website.
  • Stay abreast of the latest technology trends in education and the larger industry to provide leadership and expertise in planning future growth; special emphasis on database integration, responsive web design, and communication/marketing strategies.
  • Create templates in Blackbaud/WhippleHill for electronic newsletters; train users on how to insert content and send messages.
  • Work proactively with faculty and staff each week to gather important information about school programs and activities; post material weekly to online bulletin/events board and collaborate weekly with the Spartan Week Ahead webpage coordinator by established due date for distribution by Parents’ Association president.
  • Guide a web design club for students and possibly create and teach a web design class for students using selected web design program, such as Dreamweaver; the class would be half-credit, meeting approximately three times per seven-day rotation as part of the Fine Arts Department, as directed by the Director of Technology, Director of Fine Arts and Academic Dean.
  • Responsible for maintaining the school calendar, ensuring accuracy and appearance of all calendars, as well as the coordination, training and support of all calendar and web deputies.
  • Train all appointed users and web deputies on website use with on-site training annually and as needed. In addition, routinely create written training materials and actively distribute to support users and create goodwill.
  • Regularly review content and work with departments to ensure the most up-to-date information on the website.
  • Lead analysis of organizational needs and goals and the design and implementation of internal and external web pages and apps to ensure that all constituents are represented on the school site; consult with users to determine content requirements for web pages.
  • Work with the Director of Communications to organize/catalogue and maintain the school’s media drive, ensuring that users can easily access archived photos and content.
 
Candidate Qualities:
  • Self-motivated in seeking out and integrating the latest technologies in web development and strategy.
  • Strong personal time management skills; ability to manage multiple time-sensitive assignments simultaneously.
  • Strong attention to detail, focus on accuracy and quality.
  • Advanced editorial skills in a web environment, including copy editing/review of content prior to posting or distribution.
  • Proactive approach to work and strong desire to collaborate within a team.
  • Awareness of search engine optimization: finding key words and when and how to use them, inbound links, online copy for online audience and search engine bots, web-specific advertising and marketing.
 
While responsible for a completely accurate website, communicate with the Director of Communications to identify updated information for final approval. The school’s Web Content Manager reports to the Director of Technology.

Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor degree or higher required in MIS, Computer Science, Interactive Design or a related field
  • Minimum of five (5) years’ experience in a web-related role
  • Expert knowledge and understanding of web sites, web technology and content management systems
  • High proficiency with HTML/XHTML, Javascript and CSS
  • Proficiency with Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver and other design programs
  • Proactive approach to maintaining website and content, collaborating with others
  • Experience with Blackbaud/WhippleHill products preferred
  • Experience designing for mobile devices a plus
  • Understanding of Blackbaud/WhippleHill email platforms a plus
