Web Development Librarian
The University of Alabama Libraries seeks an enthusiastic, entrepreneurial librarian to join our collaborative, data-driven environment. Reporting to the Technology Development Librarian, this position will be instrumental in web development projects and supporting new technology initiatives critical to advancing our strategic plan and fulfilling our teaching, research, and service missions.
This position identifies and implements promising new web technologies that enhance user services and improve online experiences. Key responsibilities include maintaining and enhancing the University Libraries web presence, extending web frameworks, applications, and tools, and developing modern system integrations. The candidate must remain current with emerging technologies and be comfortable with training library faculty and staff on supported platforms. Technology support for managed library systems and services will include troubleshooting, data analysis, and system enhancements.
Working within the web development team, the Web Development Librarian will support key existing platforms such as Open Journal Systems, SpringShare, ILLiad, CONTENTdm, DSpace, ArchivesSpace, Aeon, Omeka, and WordPress. A critical aspect of this role involves taking a people-centric approach to analyzing workplace needs and recommending solutions to stakeholders. Additionally, the position will contribute to training faculty on new technologies and actively engage in faculty affairs.
The University Libraries are actively involved in the development and implementation of strategic open-source initiatives. This position offers the opportunity to contribute development work to projects such as DSpace, ArchivesSpace, Open Journal Systems, and the FOLIO Library Services Platform. The Web Development Librarian will focus on continuous improvement and professional development to remain informed about trends in library systems and emerging technologies. The successful candidate must be willing to continually learn, develop, and apply additional expertise through work-related experiences and professional development opportunities. They may be asked to pursue grant writing opportunities and submission of projects relevant to the mission of University Libraries and the University of Alabama. They must also possess the ability to navigate change and ambiguity as they successfully solve the types of complex problems encountered in research settings. Responsibilities of the position evolve as the library environment continues to change.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• MLS/MLIS degree from an ALA-accredited program, or advanced terminal degree in a comparable field from an accredited institution.
• Demonstrated experience supporting content management systems such as WordPress or Omeka.
• Proficiency in front-end web development, including HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, and/or JSON/XML.
• Aptitude for creative problem-solving.
• A growth mindset committed to continuous learning and skill development in web technologies.
• Excellent interpersonal communication and customer service skills.
• Ability to conceptualize, communicate, and execute plans to achieve goals.
• Proven ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize effectively, and meet deadlines.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• 1-2 years of experience in front-end development, including proficiency with HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, and experience with frameworks/libraries like Angular, React, or jQuery, and data formats such as JSON.
• Experience consuming and working with REST APIs.
• Proficiency in working with and writing SQL queries for relational databases (e.g., MySQL, PostgreSQL).
• Skilled in using the Linux command line and connecting to LAMP/LAPP environments via SSH.
• Experience supporting major library platforms (SpringShare Suite, ILLiad, CONTENTdm, DSpace, Aeon, ArchivesSpace, Omeka, WordPress).
• Proficiency in collaborative development workflows using Git and GitHub.
• Experience using AI generated coding language models such as Copilot, Mistral, Gemeni, Intelligence, etc.
• Working knowledge of web accessibility standards (WCAG 2, ARIA) and common remediation techniques.
• Familiarity with and dedication to creating accessible content, including familiarity with WCAG 2.0 guidelines for interactive and video content.
• Knowledge of funding sources and organizations for grant revenues.
• Experience submitting grant proposals.
• Additional advanced degree in a related field.
SALARY/BENEFITS: 12 month renewable contract faculty appointment at rank of assistant professor. Salary range is $80,000-$100,000, commensurate with qualifications, experience, and advanced degrees. Strong benefits, including professional development support and tuition fee waiver.
