The Communications Office is responsible for creating and disseminating news, information, and stories about the School and its diverse community. The Office manages the School’s strategic communications across traditional and digital media, which include the Hotchkiss website, social media, e-newsletters, Hotchkiss Magazine, and other major institutional communications. Additionally, the Office develops strategies for managing the School’s image, crisis response, and supporting the priorities of the Head of School.Reporting directly to the Chief Communications Officer, the Website and Digital Manager must be an experienced professional in producing designed digital user experiences and front-end development. The Manager must have a demonstrated ability to understand communications and marketing, including messaging, design, and digital technology. The Manager is responsible for creating compelling content through online media, including email, website, and mobile platforms. Additionally, the Manager understands how to work collaboratively with fellow team members, in order to strengthen a creative team dynamic, providing mentorship or guidance when needed. As the position evolves over time, responsibilities may shift.MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Manages the website, www.hotchkiss.org, and oversees the planning and front-end design development. Works with a CMS web vendor to manage strategic planning of content creation. Updates, supports and trains the distributed content management of the website. Contributes to content creation and curating images on the website.
  • Creates unique web experiences and produces unique campaigns to support the priorities of the School. Works collaboratively with other departments, such as Admission and Financial Aid, Alumni and Development, Summer Portals, the Arts, and other departments of the School administration.
  • Manages and designs marketing and communications in subsidiary online platforms, such as Slate, Constant Contact, and mobile platforms.
  • Designs and produces email campaigns and publications that are optimized for mobile delivery; keeps updated in front-end development trends and practices.
  • Manages the email management tool for constituent communications, such as Hotchkiss Happenings.
  • Manages special projects and specialized user experiences, such as app creation or management.
  • Manages analytics. Creates and uses data-driven reports to manage the continual development of online channels, including analytic measurements and reports gathered through Google Analytics, email software, and surveys.
  • Plans and collaborates with Information Technology and external technical resources to enhance and maintain the structure of the website, ensuring data integration.
  • Advises the School on industry standards in cross-platform communications, including email practices, social media trends, and mobile communications.
  • Contributes to management of digital assets, in collaboration with other team members.
  • Maintains the standards in writing and graphic identity.
  • Performs duties as needed or assigned by the Chief Communications Officer.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:The Communications Office works as a cohesive team unit and will be at times required to handle confidential information, providing support in areas such as leadership communications, confidential memoranda, and crisis communications.

  • Must maintain the highest level of confidentiality and the ability to work discreetly with sensitive information.
  • Must have excellent verbal and interpersonal skills and the ability to understand or anticipate the communication needs of campus partners. Must be able to work with other creative professionals collaboratively.
  • Technical skills and the ability to work with web industry standards in content management, styling and specific coding languages, such as HTML5, HTML, Javascript, Bootstrap, XSLT, and code based on contemporary approaches to mobile delivery.
  • Knowledge of trends in digital communications and analytics reports through tools such as Google Analytics.
  • Demonstrated experience in producing a range of marketing and communication pieces, across digital platforms; a professional portfolio is required.
  • Awareness of current events and trends affecting independent boarding Schools, youth culture, or key audiences (i.e. alumni and parents).
  • Ability to manage multiple projects to deadline amidst competing priorities. High level of strategic thinking, personal initiative and innovation. Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team structure.
  • Close attention to detail and a high degree of organization.
  • Knowledge of AP style.
  • Experience in digital communications at an educational institution, media company or agency is preferred.
  • Willing and able to work evenings and weekends
  • BA required, MA preferred; seven years of experience in digital communications, or an equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.
  • Familiarity with independent boarding school culture or an educational environment is welcomed.
