Job Description

The Website Designer is part of the university web team that provides vision, leadership and oversight for FGCU.EDU. This position will assist in the creation of University websites using sound governance practices for consistent site design and implementation of features and functions. This position will help conceptualize, design and implement sites that elegantly deliver content and strengthen the university brand. Provides guidance, implements solutions, and delivers creative inspiration and assistance to faculty/staff website editors.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree from and accredited institution in Digital Media, Information Technology, Web Design/Development, or a closely related field.

  • Two years of professional full-time experience as a web developer and/or web designer.

  • Any appropriate combination of relevant education, experience, and/or certifications may be considered.

  • Experience developing professional grade websites that use industry standard coding and UX/UI principles.

  • Experience with industry standard website design tools, WordPress or related CMS applications.

  • Experience with responsive fluid design practices, methods, and tools using HTML, CSS, and Javascript.

  • Experience with SEO/SEM planning and campaign management.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with XML/XSL/XSLT, SQL, and JavaScript.

  • Experience with end-user training.

  • Experience with PhotoShop, SEO, analytics monitoring and tools such as Screaming Frog.

  • Experience with site architecture layout using Mindmeister.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge of accessibility standards ADA 508/WCAG 2.

  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.

  • Strong organizational skills and an ability to prioritize and complete simultaneous projects within deadlines.

  • Ability to translate business requirements, user goals and creating strategy into engaging user experiences.

  • Ability to write content for web pages, migrate old content, or generate refreshed content with correct spelling and grammar.

Salary Range $50,000 - $55,000
Job Duties

 

Essential Job Duties
  • Designs, builds, and/or maintains websites and web applications, using various web-based programming or scripting languages.

  • Consults with departments and end users on their web goals and development needs while maintaining brand standards and usability. Analyzes user needs to determine technical requirements.

  • Translates complex prototypes into ADA compliant sites that are mobile-friendly.

  • Communicates with stakeholders and team members about best practices for building efficient, extensible, standards-based websites.

  • Assists in designing website features that solve challenges using a variety of applications and technologies.

  • Provides leadership to website editors and serves as a technical resource on web-related issues including site design, development, content creation, website templates, analytics, usability and information architecture.

  • Identifies problems uncovered by testing or customer feedback, and corrects problems or refers problems to appropriate personnel for correction.

  • Assists with the establishment of integrated web policies, directions, and standards for the University, departments, and administrative units.

  • Trains site editors and works closely with Marketing, Communications, and University departments to provide a seamless process and continuous exploration of innovative ideas for web communication.

  • Confers with management or development teams to prioritize needs, resolves conflicts, develops functional criteria, or chooses appropriate solutions.

  • Develops application architecture that may be used in the case of disaster recovery or catastrophic failure of systems

  • Evaluates code to ensure that it is valid, is properly structured, is secure, meets industry standards and is compatible with browsers, devices, or operating systems.

  • Maintains understanding of current web technologies or programming practices through continuing education, reading, or participation in professional conferences, workshops, or groups.
