Position Summary:
Manages all aspects of network and server operations, management of connectivity, network and server performance, maintaining network and server software configurations, managing the distribution of patches and software releases as needed, network and system trouble shooting, monitoring tools, alarm conditions as well as escalation processes and procedures, leading and defining the process of troubleshooting and participating in change management and root cause analysis. Manage day-to-day activities of the SysNet team(s), responsible for all aspect of maintaining a distributed network, including preventative maintenance, fault isolation, equipment installation and project, manage connectivity, network performance and timely outage resolution.

Essential Job Functions of Position:

  • Ensuring that all services shall be managed proactively to provide the appropriate level of availability and stability.

  • Restoration of service (incident management) shall be carried out within a timely and efficient manner.

  • Evolving proactive monitoring and automation of repetitive tasks and alert management.

  • Ensuring all services are described and managed to support operations, maintenance and change activities within formal or informal SLAs or commitments.

  • Continually reviewing and evolving processes.

  • Provide server operating system administration and maintenance services and first level hardware support for administrative servers.

  • Provide leadership and technical expertise to project teams.

  • Provide technical support for all network operations:

    • Provide technical and advisory support as required on network and communication issues.

    • Provide backup and recovery support for all Network systems.

    • Provide system administration services.

    • Assist in the technical specifications and coordinate equipment purchases.

    • Complete projects in a timely and correct manner.

  • Plan and coordinate the installation of new releases. Install and test new system and network releases and place them in production mode after successful testing.

  • Troubleshoot problems with system software and networking to successful resolution. Monitor systems for performance and security.

  • Review vendor software bulletins to avoid potential problems and install updates and modifications as required.

  • Confer with program product vendors regarding new product releases and for problem resolutions.

  • Evaluates equipment and software capability; researches and resolves problems; makes technical recommendations.

  • Researches and evaluates information technology hardware and software system requirements; configures, installs and maintains network hardware, server hardware and software when applicable.

  • Evaluates, recommends, implements, and ensures system security.

  • Provides operational support as needed.

  • Interact effectively with faculty, staff, students, and the community in a cooperative, courteous, and professional manner.

  • Serve on appropriate committees and teams as assigned.

  • Research strategic activities related to the Information Technology Services.

  • Organizing, planning, and consulting with internal teams/committees, partner institutions and other appropriate entities to determine state-of-the-art practices, procedures, and equipment related to Information Technology Services.

  • Directing the work of staff assigned to Systems & Networking Services.

  • Stimulating and influencing innovation and creativity at all levels within the organization.

  • Assisting with the development of Standards of Performance for all Information Technology Services activities.

  • Serves as backup to the Assistant Director as needed to address issues and concerns that need immediate attention during the Assistant Directors absence.

  • Shares in weekly on-call rotation with other members of the Systems and Networking services area to provide extended coverage and support outside of regular business hours.

Education and Experience:
A combination of information technology education and/or experience equivalent to five years.

Licenses, Certifications & Registrations:
Must obtain Cisco CCNA certification and Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) certification within 6 months of employment.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Preferred: Advanced certification in networking (CCNA, CCNP, CCIE), system administration (MSCE) or equivalent. Two or four year degree from a post-secondary institution in the area of computers, electronics or related field. Experience working in an educational environment. Knowledge, Skills And Abilities to include Active Directory, VMWare, Skype, Windows O/S and other Microsoft products including but not limited to SQL, O365, & Office related products. Experience supporting and troubleshooting a variety of switches/routers, VMWare and TCP/IP software protocols. Knowledge in Linux operating system management and in a programming or scripting language (e.g. PowerShell, BASH, Perl).
