Director of Academic Technology

The Director for Academic Technology is a critical member of the CTO’s Leadership Team with responsibility for supporting teaching and learning with technology efforts at Carleton. The Director will provide supervision and mentorship for the AT team and partnership with others in ITS as we support faculty members in their ability to leverage technologies and their experience of the Carleton classroom environment. The Director will offer vision about emerging trends in teaching with technology and leadership in developing and cultivating strategic directions.

Information Technology Services (ITS) is a department of 40 staff members in five groups: Technology Support, Enterprise Information Services, Systems & Infrastructure, Web Services, and Academic Technology (AT).

Partnership

• Work closely with the CTO, ITS leadership team, the Academic Technology team and a wide range of campus partners to understand Carleton’s academic goals and to develop operational and strategic directions in support of those goals.

• Maintain an on-going understanding of faculty needs, interests and aspirations. Identify areas for faculty development and work in partnership with faculty to evaluate and implement digital learning methods. Develop programs in consultation and partnership with the Director of the Learning & Teaching Center.

• Work closely with the Learning & Teaching Center, the Reference & Instruction librarians, and academically-affiliated support staff to develop shared support models.

• Work closely with others in ITS (e.g. the Support Services, Web Services and Infrastructure teams) to provide a unified approach to supporting the broad range of faculty and student uses of technology.

• Work closely with the Classroom Technology Manager, the Director of Technology Support and the campus Classroom Committee to develop and maintain effective classrooms and learning spaces.

• Pursue external collaborative opportunities with LACOL (The Liberal Arts Collaborative for Digital Innovation), St. Olaf, and ACM (the Associated Colleges of the Midwest).

Management & Leadership

• Provide supervision and mentorship of the Academic Technology team, which is made up of instructional technologists, application specialists and the classroom support manager. Cultivate a team-based and mission-driven approach.

• Develop, implement and monitor operational and strategic directions in collaboration with the CTO and ITS leadership team to support institutional goals within the context of national trends.

• Manage a broad portfolio of projects. Cultivate ideas and translate needs into project requirements and implementation plans. Provide regular updates to clients, the CTO and others on the status of the academic technology portfolio.

• Champion the evaluation of academic-related software and services, including vendor evaluations, pilot projects, and implementation and assessment efforts. Involve other ITS colleagues and campus partners when relevant.

• Champion evidence-based teaching practices, the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SOTL), the science of learning, and current trends and issues in teaching.

• Manage support for longer-term faculty initiatives while also providing exceptional client service for immediate and on-going needs.

Expertise

• Provide expertise in a broad array of current and emerging technologies, complementing the Academic Technology team members’ strengths in areas such as data management, digital humanities, instructional design, instructional video, augmented reality, visual design, and universal design for learning.

• Provide direct support to faculty members with an approach that strengthens their ability to make effective use of relevant technologies.

• Demonstrate and instruct faculty in teaching with technology techniques in a small residential classroom setting.

• Maintain an active professional portfolio, including conference attendance and presentations, publications, etc.

• Stay abreast of emerging technologies and the scholarship of teaching and learning. Conduct research and development into teaching and learning with technology, and participate in academic research that aligns with Carleton’s faculty and institutional interests.

Outreach

• Represent ITS on relevant governance groups, including campus committees such as the Committee for Effective Learning Technologies (CELT), the Classroom Committee and the Makerspace Committee—and lead task forces as needed.

• Serve as primary liaison to regional and national organizations with a focus on teaching and learning with technology.

• Master’s degree in a relevant field and management experience

• Experience with college-level teaching and/or faculty development

• Demonstrated ability to work with, lead and mentor a high-performing team

• Demonstrated expertise in project management and change management

• Ability to build sustainable relationships with faculty partners

• Excellent interpersonal skills, including adaptability in engaging with a diverse and independent group of collaborators

• Ability to collaborate effectively in an environment committed to equity, diversity and inclusion

• A track record in utilizing creative approaches to integrate and assess technologies that support student learning and the expanding needs of faculty

• Ph.D. or terminal degree in a relevant field and 5-7 years of management experience

• Experience with the Liberal Arts college environment

• Expertise in crafting effective teaching spaces

• National-level publications and presentations focused on furthering the effective use of technology in the service of faculty partners and institutional goals
